Tips and Strategies for Mentors

From the Harvard Business Review three questions Mentors should consider before taking on a mentee, the most important aspect for MDE Mentors is time- it doesn't take much time to exchange emails or have a skype chat with a MDE student but if you aren't sure you'll have the time this semester then please let me know.

A quick Google search reveals as many tips for mentors as there are mentoring programs, here you'll find a few that apply directly to the MDE Peer-Mentoring Program:

From the UMUC mentoring program:
"For a successful mentoring relationship, it is important that the mentees see you as a
friend who they can turn to. Finding common interests and sharing experiences can
build this part of the relationship. Once your mentees trust you, then they will feel
more comfortable expressing their concerns and asking questions. Some students
may not have anyone who is actively supporting their educational goals, and therefore
need the extra motivation from a mentor" (Hintz, 2010).

Strategies:
1.  Create a positive, personal relationship with your mentee(s)
2. Assist your mentee(s) on developing skills for academic success
3. Help your mentee(s) access academic and university resources
4. Work with your mentee(s) on solving problems
5. Actively support and motivate your mentee(s)
6. Help your mentee(s) set goals and work to accomplish them
All from Hintz, 2010.

These strategies are suggestions- each mentoring pair needs to determine what the mentee needs and how those goals can be achieved.
